Why Texture Matters More Than Colour

Tertia · Founder & Interior Designer, Mackenzie Interiors

The beauty of a quiet palette

Neutral interiors are sometimes mistaken for being plain, but I believe the opposite is true.

When colour steps back, every material has the opportunity to shine. Timber reveals its natural grain, stone reflects light in subtle ways, woven fibres add warmth, and handcrafted ceramics bring an effortless sense of character. Together, these layers create spaces that feel calm, welcoming and beautifully considered.

That said, every client is different. If someone has a vibrant personality and genuinely loves colour, I embrace that too. The key is introducing colour thoughtfully through artwork, accessories, textiles or carefully selected furniture, allowing it to bring personality without overwhelming the space.

A home should engage all the senses

The best interiors aren’t just beautiful to look at, they’re designed to be lived in.

Imagine sinking into a linen sofa, running your hand across warm timber, or feeling the texture of a woven rug beneath your feet. Sheer curtains soften the afternoon light while natural materials create a quiet sense of comfort that makes you want to stay a little longer.

These details create an emotional connection. They transform a house into a home.

Nature is my greatest inspiration

I’m continually drawn to natural materials because they age beautifully.

Timber develops character over time, linen becomes softer with use, and natural stone reveals subtle variations that make every piece unique. These aren’t imperfections, they’re the qualities that make a home feel authentic and lived in.

Rather than chasing trends, I prefer creating interiors that remain timeless because they’re grounded in nature and crafted with materials that only become more beautiful with age.

Designing for real life

Every project begins with understanding the people who will call the space home.

My goal is never to create a showroom. It’s to design spaces that are elegant, comfortable and genuinely support the way my clients live every day.

Timeless interiors begin with texture

Trends come and go, but beautifully layered interiors endure because they’re built on thoughtful materials rather than fashion.

Looking back at the homes I’ve designed, it’s always the combination of textures that creates warmth, depth and a lasting sense of calm.

For me, beautiful design isn’t about adding more. It’s about choosing meaningful materials, embracing natural beauty and creating spaces that feel every bit as good as they look.

Because long after a paint colour has changed, it’s the feeling of a space that people remember.

If you’re planning a renovation or building a new home and would like to create an interior that feels timeless, I’d love to help. Get in touch to start the conversation.
